Breastfeeding and Drugs

I breastfed for 18 months, and only stopped when my baby stopped of his own accord, and I bottle fed whenever I wanted to as well.

Of course people did give me a hard time about breastfeeding for 'so long' .... Bah.

My solution was to do it as and when I wanted to, ignoring the world, absorbing myself in breastfeeding and in the misery of post-natal-depression. I only hung out with my best mates who were also breastfeeding or all for it, and spent time at breast-feeding-friendly groups - being in accepting environments with strangers was better than dealing with people who were supposedly in my life. . . . Apart from one memorable doctor though, all the rest of 'em wanted me off the boobage so they could prescribe at will. I was never able to agree with this advice. They were never able to dig a bit deeper and actually treat me like a human being and help me medically .... If it weren't for the La Leche League, and Rachel O'Learry in particular who let me pour my heart out to her on the phone one night, I don't know what would have happened to me and my baby. I made brilliant decisions in the end, and am forever strengthened by the compassion and generosity of the LLL team and my mate Cathy who introduced me to Rachel personally, going out of her way with her own little baby hanging off her boobs (most painfully) to help me.

When I had to make decisions on taking medicines I asked Rachel from La Leche League GB for information about my prescribed medication. Their Professional Liaison Leader asked for information from Medicines Information at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Their findings were emailed to me in a way I could easily understand, and also could verify if I wanted to. All very professional and comforting. The LLL are really the best.
